Oopen, a forthcoming mixed-use development in Utrecht, Netherlands, is set to redefine the city’s architectural landscape. Designed by Heatherwick Studio in collaboration with Barcode Architects and real estate developer Edge, the project aims to create a vibrant hub for culture, work, and leisure in the heart of the Jaarbeursplein central square.
The building’s design features a series of stacked cylindrical forms, topped with landscaped terraces, creating a distinctive silhouette that contrasts with the surrounding angular structures. This unique form is intended to stand out against the backdrop of the neighborhood, marking the building’s presence and creating a new cultural destination in the city.
Oopen’s rounded shape allows for open access from all sides, promoting inclusivity and interaction. The interior spaces are designed to encourage exploration and chance encounters, with facilities ranging from sports and cultural event spaces to start-up offices, pop-up cafes, and a rooftop restaurant offering panoramic views of Utrecht’s skyline.
The project emphasizes healthy urban living, aligning with Utrecht’s vision for a sustainable and vibrant city. An indoor urban sports area and a skate park spilling out onto the public square promote active recreation, while a large public hall will host cultural events and exhibitions. Flexible kiosks will provide a variety of services, from local gastronomic highlights to charity pop-ups, and a nightclub will double as a daytime dance school and practice space for DJs.
A bicycle shed and a mobility hub will occupy an entire floor, providing a natural nexus for anyone passing through the Netherlands’ busiest train station nearby. The design also includes multiple landscaped terraces, some of which will be reserved solely for the city’s wildlife residents, enhancing the building’s connection to nature.
The adaptive timber and steel structure allows for long-term flexibility, providing options for future reconfiguration of the interior spaces. The project aims to achieve net-zero carbon status, striving to become the first zero-emissions mixed-use high-rise building in the Netherlands.
Construction on Oopen is scheduled to begin in 2025, with completion expected in 2028. The project was selected in a public competition organized by the Utrecht Municipality to envision a new center for culture, work, and leisure for the city’s diverse population.
