Renowned French architect Jean Nouvel was commissioned to reimagine Villa Belgica, a building dating back to the early 20th century, as the new headquarters for UBS Monaco. The project aimed to revitalise the existing structure while introducing modern elements to meet the bank’s evolving needs.
Villa Belgica, located at 2 Avenue de Grande Bretagne, has been a significant landmark in Monaco since its acquisition by Alfred Bouvier in 1925. Over the decades, the building underwent several modifications, including elevations in the early 1930s and between 1956 and 1959, which altered its original appearance. Jean Nouvel’s intervention in 2024 sought to preserve the building’s historical essence while integrating contemporary design elements.
Nouvel’s design approach was to create a “monolithic and monochrome” architecture, blending opaque, matte, and translucent surfaces.
