Heatherwick Studio’s design for the Universidad EAN in Bogotá, Colombia, introduces a vibrant and culturally resonant addition to the city’s architectural landscape. This seven-storey building, situated along Calle 72, one of Bogotá’s main thoroughfares, serves as the new home for the university’s School of Sustainable Design. The façade is distinguished by colourful, crafted columns and open terraces, drawing inspiration from Werregue basketry—a traditional weaving technique unique to Colombia’s Wounaan indigenous community.

The building’s design aims to instil a sense of pride among students and the local community. A public square at the entrance offers a welcoming communal space, providing an oasis amidst the urban environment. This approach reflects Bogotá’s intrinsic creativity and the studio’s commitment to integrating the building into the city’s cultural fabric.
Complementing the existing heritage structures on the campus, the new building introduces a rare public space to the city. The design team is developing innovative façade materials to address the high levels of sunlight at Bogotá’s altitude, ensuring the building’s longevity and resilience.

Emphasising sustainability, the project incorporates biophilic design principles by integrating local plant species on the open terraces. This initiative brings elements of Colombia’s cloud forest into the urban setting, aligning with Bogotá’s commitments as a signatory to the C40 Urban Nature Declaration.
