State Theatre by Henry Eli White + John Eberson in Sydney, Australia

The State Theatre is Sydney’s landmark late-1920s picture palace: a Gothic Market Street tower opening into one of the richest theatre interiors in Australia. Designed by New Zealand–born theatre architect Henry Eli White from original ideas developed with Chicago atmospheric specialist John Eberson, it fills 47–51 Market Street in the Sydney CBD and remains a working theatre — photographed here for its Gothic Hall foyer, heraldic sculpture and gilded Baroque auditorium.

White, Eberson and the Empire's Greatest Theatre

White, who designed some 120 theatres across Australia and New Zealand, based the Sydney State on schemes produced with Eberson after visiting the American’s atmospheric houses. Column-free balconies and a fly-tower stage show Eberson’s influence, while White executed the full Gothic street front, Shopping Block and the sequence of themed lobbies. Built for Stuart Doyle’s Union Theatres between 1926 and 1929 on the former Evening News site, the “Empire’s Greatest Theatre” opened on 7 June 1929 with Ernst Lubitsch’s The Patriot, Will Prior’s band and Price Dunlavy at the Wurlitzer.

Gothic Hall to Baroque auditorium

The procession of rooms is the building’s great idea. From the Gothic Revival street facade and 14th-century Gothic Hall — fan vaults, mosaic ‘Gothic Hall’ floor, bronze knights and a Saint George relief — patrons move through a Robert Adam–inspired Empire Room and Baroque rotunda into French Empire foyers and finally the richly detailed Baroque auditorium. Scagliola marble finishes, heraldic friezes and carved timber galleries carry the fantasy; the Koh-i-Noor crystal chandelier (one of the world’s largest) hangs beneath a coffered dome over three tiers of seating.

Depression, film festival and live revival

Originally about 2,572 seats and billed among Union’s “Million Dollar Theatres”, the house survived Depression liquidation into Greater Union ownership and later hosted newsreels, postwar premieres and, from 1974, the Sydney Film Festival. Restorations in the early 1980s and 1990s returned live concert and musical theatre use — from Bette Midler and Evita to Nick Cave — while keeping the Gothic and Empire rooms intact. Listed on the NSW State Heritage Register since 2 April 1999, it remains EVT’s flagship Sydney venue.

Heritage listing and the photographs

Today the State seats 2,034 across stalls, mezzanine lounge and dress circle, still under the Market Street Gothic tower that once capped a vertical Shopping Block of some 150 shops. The photographs here favour sharp modern Commons views of that facade and blade sign, the Gothic Hall vaults and mosaic, the bronze Saint George ensemble, heraldic timberwork and the gilded proscenium in performance — plus the historic 1929 opening-night street scene as the sole archival frame.
