The Residence on Kiawah Island, completed in 2003, stands as a testament to Robert A.M. Stern Architects’ dedication to blending traditional architectural styles with the unique demands of coastal living. Drawing inspiration from the rustic shingled cottages designed by McKim, Mead & White for the Montauk Association on Long Island, the residence features a simple, rectangular mass softened by gables, dormers, bay windows, and a broad wrap-around porch on the main floor. This design approach not only pays homage to classic architectural elements but also adapts them to the specific context of Kiawah Island’s coastal environment.

In adherence to government flood guidelines, the habitable spaces of the house are elevated a full story above grade. This design decision results in a plinth that supports the Tuscan colonnade of the main-level porch, creating a harmonious balance between the structure’s base and its upper levels. The entry facade is marked by a brick chimney that bisects the central gable, providing a strong vertical counterpoint to the horizontal base and adding a distinctive architectural feature that enhances the residence’s visual appeal.

The interior layout of the Residence on Kiawah Island is thoughtfully arranged to maximise ocean views and natural light. Principal rooms are en suite along the ocean side, with rhythmically disposed, deeply angled bays opening views from each room to the east and west, along the shoreline as well as out to sea. This design ensures that the residents can enjoy panoramic vistas from multiple vantage points within the home. On the third floor, a home office occupies the centre of the house, serving as a private aerie for the owners and offering a serene space to work while being enveloped by the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Approximately two decades after its initial completion, the Residence on Kiawah Island underwent a significant renovation and addition. The new owners, who had long admired the house and its Shingle Style architecture, sought to update the kitchen and open it up to the family room. They also desired a large entertaining room and a small office behind the pergola overlooking the pool. The renovation expanded to include re-planning the primary suite and third floor, replacing and upgrading finishes and fixtures in every room, and overhauling the mechanical and lighting systems throughout the house. This comprehensive update ensured that the residence met contemporary standards while preserving its architectural integrity.

The collaboration between Robert A.M. Stern Architects and interior designer Tammy Connor was instrumental in realising the owners’ vision for the Residence on Kiawah Island. Tammy Connor’s expertise in interior design played a crucial role in communicating and anticipating the owners’ preferences, resulting in a cohesive and inviting living space. The interiors were designed to reflect an informal and casual atmosphere, with finishes carefully selected to create a soft patina appropriate to a beach setting. The use of soft colour palettes, rich yet durable fabrics, distressed woods, and traditional light fixtures contributed to the home’s relaxed and welcoming ambiance.

The exterior of the Residence on Kiawah Island was also thoughtfully reimagined during the renovation. Landscape architect Cindy Cline worked closely with the design team to revamp the site, introducing a more formal entry drive and motor court, a tennis court and pavilion, and lush plantings. These enhancements not only improved the functionality and aesthetics of the outdoor spaces but also ensured that the residence harmoniously integrated with its natural surroundings, providing a seamless transition between the built environment and the coastal landscape.

The Residence on Kiawah Island exemplifies the architectural philosophy of Robert A.M. Stern Architects, which emphasises the importance of context, tradition, and timeless design. By drawing inspiration from historical precedents and adapting them to the specific conditions of Kiawah Island, the residence achieves a harmonious balance between classic architectural elements and modern living requirements. The thoughtful design and meticulous attention to detail result in a home that is both enduring and responsive to the needs of its inhabitants.

In conclusion, the Residence on Kiawah Island stands as a remarkable example of how traditional architectural styles can be successfully adapted to contemporary coastal living. Through careful design and collaboration, Robert A.M. Stern Architects and their partners have created a residence that not only honours architectural history but also provides a comfortable and functional living space for its owners. The residence’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to blend the charm of classic design with the demands of modern life, making it a cherished home for years to come.
