Limusina, a striking three-level Mexican restaurant in Midtown Manhattan, opened its doors in 2024. Located at 441 Ninth Avenue, the 5,000-square-foot establishment seats over 200 guests and occupies a transformed parking garage. The restaurant is the latest venture from Quality Branded, the team behind acclaimed establishments like Quality Bistro, Zou Zou’s, and Twin Tails.

Designed by GRT Architects, known for their work on Don Angie, Bad Roman, and San Sabino, Limusina showcases a bold, retro-futuristic aesthetic. The design draws inspiration from cinematic surrealism, reminiscent of Blade Runner’s reinterpretation of the Ennis House and Bradbury Building. This influence is evident in the juxtaposition of warm lighting, geometric patterns, and unexpected material contrasts throughout the space.

The main bar features abstract planes of peach, amber, and pale violet light, set against honed marble slabs embedded with black limestone clasts. These elements create a dynamic visual experience, blending warmth and texture. In the main dining area, sheer curtains dyed with natural hues filter light into an orange sherbet glow, complemented by monumental chandeliers and a bold black-and-white trapezoid marble floor.

Custom glass and lighting installations further enhance the restaurant’s unique ambiance. A former loading dock has been transformed into a private dining room, glazed with violet bullions, offering an intimate setting. Breezeblock walls, steel-framed glass, and lattice-like chandeliers introduce layers of rhythm and reflection, adding depth to the design.

Limusina’s design juxtaposes raw concrete columns and soaring ceilings with sleek, futuristic finishes. A striking back bar features graphic marble and lightboxes, creating a focal point that embodies the restaurant’s bold aesthetic.

The restaurant offers four private event spaces, each customizable to various needs. The Condesa and Polanco Rooms, located a few steps above the main dining area, are adorned with alternating panels of fabric and mirrors, along with vintage and contemporary light fixtures. These rooms can be combined for larger events, accommodating up to 75 guests. The Laguna Room, situated off the lower dining area, features hand-filled red travertine walls and custom light fixtures, providing an intimate setting for up to 16 guests. The Mezcal Vault, a fully private space for up to 10 guests, is accessed through a hidden door in the back bar and is stocked with terracotta sculptures and a curated selection of mezcal bottles.

The menu at Limusina features familiar Mexican favorites and new takes on classics, plus presentations that only Quality Branded can do.

Limusina’s design reflects a maximalist approach, combining rich materials, textures, and colours to create a vibrant and immersive dining experience. The collaboration between Quality Branded and GRT Architects has resulted in a space that is both bold and transporting, capturing the essence of cinematic surrealism with a modern twist.

The restaurant’s unique design and ambiance have garnered attention, with patrons praising its striking decor and innovative approach to Mexican cuisine. Limusina stands as a testament to the creative vision of its designers and the culinary expertise of its team, offering a memorable experience in the heart of New York City.
