Henderson Cifi Tiandi, also known as The Roof, is a mixed-use development in Shanghai’s Huangpu District, completed in 2021. Designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, the project encompasses 40,000 square metres, combining 25,000 square metres of office space with 15,000 square metres dedicated to retail and food and beverage outlets.

Situated between Ma Dang and Dan Shui streets, the development pays homage to the Former French Concession’s architectural heritage. Nouvel envisioned a high, narrow, covered street—a modern reinterpretation of traditional Shanghai lanes—connecting the two thoroughfares.
The exterior features a greyish-beige palette, offering glimpses into the vibrant interior through entrances on both streets. Inside, a two-level shopping street is interspersed with overhead walkways and small bridges, creating a dynamic urban experience.

A distinctive element of the design is the “street of 1000 red jars,” where rows of earthenware jars planted with various species of plants form floral walls along the passageway. This feature introduces a naturalistic touch, enhancing the urban landscape with seasonal colours and floral diversity.
The interplay between retail spaces, office areas, and rooftop restaurants fosters a lively and animated environment. Adjustable slats on the building’s facades create dynamic shadow patterns, adding depth and intrigue to the streetscape.

The passageway’s walls are painted in hues of brown, amber, orange, and multiple reds, enriching the Huai Hai side of Shanghai with a unique open-and-covered street experience.
The project reflects Nouvel’s commitment to integrating modern design with historical context, creating a harmonious blend of old and new. Henderson Cifi Tiandi stands as a testament to innovative urban design, offering a vibrant space that resonates with Shanghai’s rich architectural heritage.
The development’s completion in 2021 marked a significant addition to Shanghai’s architectural landscape, providing a contemporary space that honours the city’s historical roots. Henderson Cifi Tiandi exemplifies the fusion of modernity and tradition, offering a dynamic environment for both residents and visitors.
Through its thoughtful design and integration with the surrounding urban fabric, Henderson Cifi Tiandi contributes to the ongoing evolution of Shanghai’s architectural identity. The project serves as a model for future developments that seek to balance innovation with respect for historical context.
