Heatherwick Studio’s 1000 Trees, completed in 2021, is a transformative mixed-use development in Shanghai, China. Spanning 300,000 square metres, the project is situated along a bend in Suzhou Creek, adjacent to the M50 art district and a public park. The design concept emerged from the studio’s previous success with the UK Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, leading to an invitation to design this expansive development.
The development comprises two interconnected structures, envisioned as forest-capped mountains rising from the waterfront. This design approach was chosen to integrate the building with the surrounding landscape, avoiding the typical monolithic scale of large developments. The project features a mix of retail spaces, offices, a school, hotel rooms, and art galleries, aiming to create a vibrant urban environment.
A distinctive feature of 1000 Trees is its structural design, which exposes the building’s columns, transforming them into planters that support over 1,000 trees. This innovative approach not only provides structural support but also contributes to the building’s unique aesthetic and environmental sustainability. The integration of greenery helps to cool the environment and enhances the building’s connection to nature.
The development is divided into two phases. The first phase, completed in 2021, includes the western half of the site and features shops, cafes, restaurants, public spaces, and promenades. This phase also integrates an existing riverside park and heritage structures, preserving the site’s historical significance.
The southern façade of 1000 Trees serves as a canvas for a vast collection of street art, reflecting the energy and traditions of the nearby M50 art district. Sixteen local and international artists were commissioned to create murals, adding a dynamic cultural element to the development. This integration of art and architecture fosters a sense of community and cultural expression within the urban environment.
The project’s design also addresses environmental sustainability by creating its own micro-climate through extensive planting. The combination of deciduous, evergreen, fruit, and flowering trees, along with shrubs and hanging plants, contributes to biodiversity and enhances the urban ecosystem. This approach demonstrates a commitment to integrating nature into urban design, promoting ecological balance in a densely populated city.
The integration of heritage structures within 1000 Trees highlights the project’s respect for the site’s history. Elements of the former Fufeng flour mill have been preserved and reimagined, such as the factory tower being reassembled in weathered Cor-ten steel, now housing a scenic glass lift. This thoughtful incorporation of historical elements adds depth and character to the development, bridging the past and present.
The project’s location in the Putuo district, a densely populated residential area, underscores its role in enhancing the urban experience.
