The House on Lily Pond Lane, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, is a notable example of the firm’s commitment to blending traditional architectural styles with modern living requirements. Located in East Hampton, New York, this residence began as a renovation of a 1920s Colonial-style house. The original structure’s charm was evident, but certain aspects, such as low ceilings and limited access to the garden, did not meet the clients’ needs. To address these issues, the design team raised the first-floor ceilings by two feet and added French doors across the garden-facing facade, enhancing the connection between the interior and the outdoors.

A significant transformation was achieved by replacing the original clapboard siding with Alaskan yellow-cedar shingles, giving the house a fresh and timeless appearance. The addition of a continuous porch across the front facade, inspired by a McKim, Mead & White house in nearby Southampton, further enhanced the residence’s character. This porch features pedimented pavilions at each end, providing sheltered outdoor spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The interior layout was thoughtfully reconfigured to accommodate modern living while preserving the home’s original appeal. The central stair hall and straightforward floor plan were retained, ensuring a sense of continuity and familiarity. The design also incorporated a screened porch on the west end and enlarged existing porches on the east end, creating inviting spaces for outdoor entertaining and relaxation.
