The Learning Hub at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, designed by Heatherwick Studio and executed by lead architect CPG Consultants, stands as a pioneering educational landmark. Completed in 2015, this innovative structure reimagines the traditional university building, fostering a dynamic environment that encourages collaboration and interaction among students and faculty. The design comprises twelve eight-storey towers arranged around a central public atrium, collectively providing 56 tutorial rooms without corners or obvious fronts. This configuration promotes a more egalitarian and interactive learning experience, moving away from conventional classroom layouts.

The building’s exterior features a distinctive undulating texture, achieved through the use of 700 specially commissioned drawings embedded into the concrete stair and elevator cores. These three-dimensional images, created by illustrator Sara Fanelli, reference a diverse range of subjects from science to art and literature, serving as thought-provoking stimuli for the imagination. The curved facade panels are cast with a unique horizontal pattern, made with ten cost-efficient adjustable silicone moulds, creating a complex three-dimensional texture. This innovative approach results in a facade that appears handcrafted from wet clay, adding a tactile quality to the building’s appearance.

Internally, the Learning Hub is designed to facilitate natural ventilation, addressing Singapore’s year-round warm temperatures. The open and permeable atrium maximises air circulation around the towers of tutorial rooms, ensuring a comfortable environment without the reliance on energy-intensive air conditioning systems. Each room is cooled using silent convection, further enhancing energy efficiency. These sustainable design strategies contributed to the building receiving the Green Mark Platinum status from Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority, recognising its high environmental performance.

The Learning Hub’s design also includes balconies and gardens on selected floors, providing informal spaces for collaborative learning and social interaction. This integration of green spaces within the building not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also promotes a connection with nature, contributing to the overall well-being of its occupants. The building’s open and permeable atrium is naturally ventilated, maximising air circulation around the towers of tutorial rooms and allowing students to feel as cool as possible. Each room is cooled using silent convection, which does away with the need for energy-heavy air conditioning fans.

The Learning Hub’s innovative approach to educational architecture has garnered international recognition. It was shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival Awards in 2015, highlighting its significance in contemporary architectural discourse. The building’s unique design challenges traditional notions of university spaces, offering a model for future educational facilities that prioritise flexibility, sustainability, and community engagement.

In summary, the Learning Hub at NTU Singapore exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to educational architecture. Its design fosters a collaborative and interactive learning environment, integrates sustainable practices, and challenges conventional building forms. As a result, it serves as a benchmark for future educational facilities, demonstrating how architecture can enhance the learning experience and contribute positively to the environment.
