Sotto Restaurant and Bar, located in New York City and designed by Parts and Labor Design, was completed in 2023. Situated beneath the Italian restaurant Lupetto, Sotto offers an intimate, subterranean escape that merges nostalgic charm with contemporary elegance. The space was conceived under the creative direction of Jeremy Levitt and Danu Kennedy, aiming to transport guests to another time while keeping the ambiance modern and relevant.

The design of Sotto is inspired by the concept of "Mad Men on holiday," creating a sophisticated yet relaxed environment. This theme is evident from the moment guests descend the stairwell adorned with brass wolf paw prints, leading them into a setting where rich textures and vintage elements dominate. The bar's aesthetic draws heavily on mid-century modern influences, complemented by the use of dark woods, lush fabrics, and moody lighting.

Materials play a significant role in Sotto's design. The interior features dark burled wood walls and ceilings, which contribute to the feeling of exclusivity and warmth. Custom lighting elements, including a velvet-framed chandelier with hand-dyed tassels and triangular metallic sconces, create a dramatic effect, enhancing the overall luxurious atmosphere. The bespoke banquettes and tables, crafted by Parts and Labor Design, further emphasize the custom, high-end feel of the space.

Unique design features such as the Hollywood-style banquette in a cozy nook and outward-facing seating arrangements ensure that every guest feels part of the vibrant, communal atmosphere. The low-lit, pink and golden-hued vignettes throughout the bar provide an inviting and visually stimulating experience, encouraging guests to lose themselves in the moment and enjoy their surroundings fully.

Sotto’s importance lies in its ability to create an immersive and memorable experience for its patrons. The thoughtful design, blending nostalgic references with contemporary elements, offers a unique escape from the bustling streets of Manhattan. The bar's focus on detail and ambiance makes it a standout destination for both locals and visitors looking for an elegant yet approachable night out.

In conclusion, Sotto Restaurant and Bar exemplifies the innovative and experiential design philosophy of Parts and Labor Design. Its impact extends beyond its aesthetic appeal, fostering a sense of connection and enjoyment among its guests. The project is a testament to the firm's ability to create spaces that are both timeless and of-the-moment, providing a perfect setting for socializing and relaxation.
