Sjøhavn House, designed by Lightbody Architects, is a striking residential project located along the Noosa River in Noosa Heads, Australia. Completed in 2023, this riverfront home harmonizes Scandinavian influences with the local Queenslander vernacular, embodying the concept of "Sea Gardens" as inspired by the client's Scandinavian heritage.

The design focuses on creating a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor environments, responding sensitively to its riverside location and the potential flood levels. The house features a minimalist material palette dominated by off-form concrete, chosen for its durability, thermal properties, and flexibility. This material allows for the incorporation of extensive landscaping with suspended planters around the second story, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and environmental integration.

A central double-height void serves as the heart of the home, providing visual and physical connectivity between the two levels. This space creates a dynamic interaction between the interior and the riverfront, drawing natural light into the home and offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape. The design includes cantilevered sections and expansive verandahs, echoing traditional Queenslander features while providing intimate spaces for retreat and reflection.

The primary external living area is complemented by smaller, more intimate spaces that offer privacy and solitude, articulated by the cantilever above. This design approach ensures that the house not only blends with its natural surroundings but also provides a variety of spaces for relaxation and social interaction.

Passive design principles are central to the home's functionality. By leveraging the thermal mass of the concrete and incorporating strategies for optimal natural ventilation and shading, the house maintains a comfortable internal climate throughout the year. These sustainable design elements underscore the architects' commitment to creating a home that is both beautiful and environmentally responsive.

Overall, Sjøhavn House exemplifies a sophisticated blend of modern architectural practices with traditional influences, resulting in a home that is both a tranquil retreat and a testament to thoughtful design. The project highlights Lightbody Architects' ability to create spaces that resonate with their natural surroundings while offering a high level of comfort and aesthetic quality.
