The Metropolitan Station in Lublin, designed by Tremend Architecture Studio, is a state-of-the-art transport hub that exemplifies modern, sustainable design. Completed in December 2023, this facility is a key element of the Integrated Transportation Centre in Lublin, Poland, connecting urban, regional, and national transport systems. The station is strategically located near the historic 19th-century Lublin Central Railway Station, integrating seamlessly with its urban and architectural context.
The design features of the Metropolitan Station include canopied platforms with terminals for urban and regional road transport, an underground parking lot, taxi bays, and cycle stands. A prominent aspect of the design is the use of transparent glass with integrated photovoltaic cells on the dual-function smart bus shelter canopy. This canopy shades 43 pocket bus stands and harvests solar energy to power the station, reflecting the project's commitment to sustainability.
One of the most striking architectural elements of the station is its openwork steel columns that support the canopy roofs. These columns, reminiscent of intertwined tree trunks, provide both structural support and aesthetic appeal, lending the station a sense of lightness and organic integration with the surrounding environment. The use of materials such as stainless steel and glass further enhances this modernist pavilion's sleek, contemporary look.
The Metropolitan Station also emphasizes eco-friendly design. It incorporates several sustainable features, including energy-efficient HVAC systems with individual temperature controls, smart lighting control systems, and self-cleaning concrete pavers that reduce air pollution. The station's design includes a vertical garden and a greywater system for rainwater harvesting, which is used for landscape irrigation and flushing toilets. Radiant heating and cooling systems, powered by cascade heat pumps using 42 boreholes, ensure efficient thermal management within the station.
