Foster + Partners, a globally renowned architectural firm, has been awarded the contract to design the master plan for the new King Salman International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This ambitious project is set to transform Riyadh into a major global logistics hub, significantly boosting transport, trade, and tourism, and enhancing connectivity between the East and the West. Scheduled for completion in 2030, the airport aims to accommodate up to 120 million travelers annually by that time and 185 million by 2050.

Covering an expansive area of approximately 57 square kilometers, King Salman International Airport will include six parallel runways and incorporate the existing terminals named after King Khalid. The design also features 12 square kilometers dedicated to airport support facilities, residential and recreational amenities, retail outlets, and other logistics real estate. This comprehensive infrastructure will support a seamless customer journey and world-class operational efficiency, establishing the airport as a central aerotropolis.

A key aspect of the airport’s design is its commitment to sustainability. Foster + Partners plans to achieve LEED Platinum certification by integrating cutting-edge green initiatives and ensuring the airport is powered by renewable energy. The design incorporates natural elements, tempered light, and state-of-the-art facilities, reflecting Riyadh's identity and Saudi culture. This focus on environmental stewardship is expected to set new standards in airport design and operations.

Luke Fox, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners, emphasized that the new King Salman International Airport reimagines the traditional terminal as a single concourse loop served by multiple entrances. This innovative design approach aims to connect passengers to the sensory experiences of the city, enhancing their overall travel experience. The airport will not only serve as a transportation hub but also as a bridge linking diverse cultures and economies across the globe.

Seif A. Bahaa Eldin, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners, highlighted the project's visionary role in shaping Riyadh into a global hub of creativity and innovation. The airport is expected to play a significant role in Saudi Arabia's economic diversification plan under Vision 2030, contributing to an increase in non-oil GDP and creating numerous employment opportunities.

In summary, King Salman International Airport is poised to become one of the largest and most advanced airports in the world, blending sustainable design with cultural elements to offer a unique and efficient travel experience. This project marks a significant step forward in Riyadh's development as a global city and a key player in international aviation.
