The primary goal was to create a sophisticated yet inviting home for a couple and their teenage daughter, balancing the needs for hosting guests and maintaining privacy.
The design concept emphasizes a seamless integration of modern living within the historic early 20th-century setting of the building. Spring Arkitektkontor relocated the kitchen to a more central position, establishing a fluid connection between the kitchen, living room, and dining room. This strategic move facilitates easy interaction and entertaining while maintaining the elegance and functionality envisioned by the clients.
Spatially, the apartment is organized to ensure both public and private areas are well-defined. A centrally located inner hallway provides access to the living and dining rooms, optimizing the flow for guests. Meanwhile, the master bedroom, complete with a walk-in closet and bath, is positioned at one end of the apartment, while the teenage daughter's section, featuring her own living room, bath, and walk-in closet, is at the opposite end. This layout ensures privacy for family members while still allowing for communal spaces.
The interior design skillfully blends old-world charm with contemporary aesthetics. Custom-made fixed furniture complements the apartment’s original palette of oak and green marble from nearby Kolmården. The cabinetry in the hallway retains the historic expression, while contemporary carpentry throughout the rest of the apartment creates a dynamic interplay between traditional and modern elements. This design approach results in a space that is both elegant and functional.
Materials were carefully selected to enhance the apartment’s ambiance. Custom-made furniture, carpets, and curtains add warmth and character. The walls and ceilings, painted in varying shades of gray, provide a serene backdrop for colorful accents and personal touches.
