Huashan Middle School's Boguqi Campus, designed by Zhaohui Rong Studio, is situated in Tiemenguan City, Xinjiang, China. Completed in 2022, the project showcases innovative educational architecture tailored to its unique geographical context between the Tianshan Mountains and the Taklamakan Desert.

The design concept for Huashan Middle School revolves around creating a "Square City" — a defensive architectural strategy that protects the interior from harsh external elements. This concept translates into two square rings: a larger ring for educational purposes and a smaller ring for accommodation. This approach not only provides a secure environment but also creates an "artificial nature" within the campus, blending education with the natural surroundings of the Gobi Desert.

Materials used in the construction of the school include metal, brick, glass, and specialized coatings. These materials were chosen to withstand the extreme climatic conditions of the region, characterized by low annual precipitation and significant temperature variations. The use of brick in key areas contrasts with the large plastered walls, adding a sense of warmth and a handcrafted quality to the rugged structure.

One of the unique design features of the campus is its nearly 9,000 square meter central courtyard, known as the "Hundred Trees Garden." This space features micro-topography with a three-meter elevation difference, creating a dynamic and layered environment. The courtyard also includes an outdoor performance plaza, enhancing its functionality as a communal space for students.

A critical aspect of the project is the library, strategically positioned at the intersection of the educational and accommodation rings. This circular hollow atrium allows natural light to flood the space, fostering an environment conducive to learning and reflection. The library serves as both a physical and intellectual hub, facilitating the exchange of knowledge among students and staff.

The impact of Huashan Middle School's Boguqi Campus is significant in terms of both educational innovation and architectural resilience. By integrating local materials and construction techniques, Zhaohui Rong Studio has created a sustainable and culturally relevant educational facility. The campus not only enhances the learning experience for students but also stands as a testament to adaptive architecture in challenging environments.
