Château Pavie Macquin Winery, located in the esteemed Saint-Émilion wine region of France, represents a harmonious blend of historical charm and modern innovation. Designed by BPM Architectes, the renovation and extension of this winery were completed in 2022, covering an area of 1,900 square meters. The project aimed to maintain the estate's rich heritage while incorporating sustainable practices and contemporary design elements.
The architectural design of Château Pavie Macquin reflects its natural surroundings. The winery is positioned on a hill, and its low height and horizontal massing allow it to blend seamlessly with the rolling landscape of Saint-Émilion. The use of local limestone and clay roof tiles ties the new structures to the historical vernacular architecture of the region. This careful selection of materials not only ensures durability but also reinforces the winery's connection to its terroir.
One of the standout features of the renovation is the underground aging cellar, which is carved into the hillside. This space, often dug more than seven meters below ground, leverages the thermal inertia of the soil to maintain ideal conditions for wine maturation. The concrete walls, made with topsoil extracted from the site, echo the clay and limestone layers characteristic of the estate, highlighting the geological richness that contributes to the vineyard's unique terroir.
Sustainability was a key focus in the redesign of Château Pavie Macquin. The project includes several eco-friendly strategies, such as rainwater harvesting systems to reduce water usage and energy-efficient building designs that minimize the need for artificial heating and cooling. By using locally sourced materials, the winery reduces its carbon footprint, supporting both environmental stewardship and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship.
The interior spaces of the winery are designed to enhance functionality while showcasing the artistry of winemaking. Modern stainless steel fermentation tanks, reworked pipes, and flexible layouts improve the efficiency of the winemaking process. Natural light floods the production areas through clerestory windows and skylights, connecting the indoor spaces with the scenic outdoors. The barrel room, with its sculptural wooden ceiling and central boulder, creates a serene and sacred atmosphere ideal for aging fine wines.
