The Museum Hotel Antakya, designed by Emre Arolat Architecture, is a remarkable fusion of contemporary design and ancient heritage, situated in Antakya, Turkey. Completed in 2019, this 199-room hotel is strategically located near the Saint Peter’s Church on Mount Starius, a site believed to have hosted the first Christian congregation. The hotel is built atop archaeological findings dating back to antiquity, including mosaics, baths, and piazzas, seamlessly integrating modern architecture with historical preservation.

The design approach of The Museum Hotel Antakya was deeply influenced by the unique context of the site. Emre Arolat Architecture aimed to create a structure that not only provided luxury accommodations but also honoured the rich archaeological heritage beneath. The hotel is elevated on 66 composite columns, each 120 cm in diameter, forming a steel grid that lifts the building above the ancient ruins. This innovative structural solution ensures minimal disturbance to the archaeological layers while offering guests panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The building is organised into four distinct layers. The first level serves as an open-air museum, directly above the archaeological site, allowing visitors to experience the ancient ruins up close. The second level comprises the hotel’s public areas, including the lobby and restaurant, which hover over the archaeological findings, providing a unique dining experience with historical vistas. The third level features prefabricated hotel rooms arranged around open-air circulation spaces, maintaining visual connections with the mosaics below. The topmost level, a protective canopy, houses the ballroom, spa, meeting rooms, and a specialty restaurant, all set within tree-filled courtyards that enhance the connection to the local context.

A significant challenge in the design process was the integration of modern hotel facilities with the preservation of archaeological remains. Traditional hotel amenities, such as the ballroom, restaurant, nightclub, gym, and swimming pool, are elevated on the canopy level, drawing inspiration from traditional local architecture with its open courtyards and landscape elements. This design choice not only protects the archaeological site but also offers guests a unique spatial experience that reflects the region’s cultural heritage.

The interior design of The Museum Hotel Antakya reflects the rich cultural history of Antakya. The guest rooms are adorned with mosaic-inspired designs, en-suite marble bathrooms, and woven Antakyan furniture, creating a serene environment that connects guests to the ancient past. The use of copper accents and warm wooden floors adds a touch of modern luxury, while large windows offer views of the ancient mosaics and the surrounding Habibi Neccar mountains.

The hotel’s design also incorporates sustainable features, such as a highly efficient passive ventilation system that eliminates the need for mechanical air conditioning in circulation areas. The omission of an outer facade allows air to circulate freely between the footpaths and the rooms, harnessing local prevailing winds to maintain a comfortable indoor climate. A glass protective wall at the ground level safeguards the archaeological findings from dust and environmental elements, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

The Museum Hotel Antakya has been recognised for its innovative design and cultural significance. It has received several awards, including the Outstanding Property Award in 2022 and the Bigsee Architecture Award in 2021. These accolades highlight the project’s successful integration of modern architecture with historical preservation, setting a precedent for future developments in culturally sensitive areas.

In conclusion, The Museum Hotel Antakya stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of modern architecture and ancient history. Its design not only provides luxury accommodations but also offers guests an immersive experience into the rich cultural heritage of Antakya. By elevating the hotel above the archaeological site and incorporating elements of traditional local architecture, the project honours the past while embracing the future, setting a new standard for culturally sensitive architectural design.
