Apple Brompton Road, a collaboration between Apple and Foster + Partners, opened in July 2022 in London’s Knightsbridge district. Situated between the renowned department stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols, the store occupies a single-floor, square footprint, with a seven-metre-tall volume that features an undulating timber ceiling.

The store’s design incorporates four-metre-wide, floor-to-ceiling arched windows that flood the interior with natural light. These windows frame eight Ficus trees, referencing London’s famous Hyde Park, located nearby. The tree-lined seating at the base of each planter serves as a visual feature and a social gathering space, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside while bringing nature directly into the building.
The curved timber ceiling reflects the existing geometry of the building’s historic façade. Integrated fixtures merge seamlessly with the timber panels, having been designed to match their colour and finish. A warm palette of materials, including stone, wood, and terrazzo, complements the building’s exterior façade of bath stone and red brick.

Visitors enter the store through the central arcade, mirroring the dimensions of the original Brompton Arcade, built in 1903. This central spine is defined by Castagna stone columns and four Ficus trees that also have seating at their bases. At the end of the tree-lined arcade sits the Forum, a separate learning and event space with a large video wall. The screen appears to float effortlessly on the surface, with the audio equipment discreetly integrated into the stone walls.
The Forum’s volumes are amplified by a mirrored ceiling made from a specialised stretched fabric, generating an uninterrupted reflective plane. A designated Apple Pickup area, for collecting online orders, is positioned adjacent to the Avenue area on the left.

Apple Brompton Road’s terrazzo flooring is comprised of plant-based biopolymers, the first of its kind in Apple’s worldwide retail fleet. Like all Apple facilities, Apple Brompton Road is powered by 100 percent renewable energy.
The store’s design creates a calming and coherent environment for visitors and staff, blending historic and natural elements. The integration of Ficus trees and the use of natural materials contribute to a serene atmosphere, offering a respite in the bustling city.
Apple Brompton Road exemplifies Apple’s commitment to sustainability and design excellence. The collaboration with Foster + Partners has resulted in a flagship store that honours the site’s history while providing a modern and inviting space for customers.
The store’s location in Knightsbridge, a district known for its luxury shopping, aligns with Apple’s brand identity. The design’s emphasis on natural light and greenery offers a unique shopping experience, setting it apart from traditional retail environments.
Apple Brompton Road stands as a testament to innovative retail design, merging architectural heritage with contemporary aesthetics. Its thoughtful design and sustainable features make it a significant addition to London’s architectural landscape.
